The Iceland government started the largest project in the history of Iceland, to turn its wilderness and beautiful nature into a massive system of hydro-electric and geothermal power plants with dams and reservoirs to provide Alcoa cheap electricity for an aluminum smelter. Environmental activists view these actions as criminal, and left-wing economists believe they will bring only a temporary boost to the economy, rather than structural growth. But some Icelanders view this opportunity with Alcoa as the last chance to realize a century-long industrial dream for this country. Today Iceland is left holding a huge debt and an uncertain future.
