China 21, a new one-hour documentary, follows four Chinese families as they step into the 21st century. Using compact digital video gear, filmmakers Ruby Yang and Lambert Yam recorded intimate portraits of ordinary people living in tumultuous times. The talk is candid and sometimes emotional. Families are small -- one child in the city, two in the country -- so children hold center stage. Veterans of the Cultural Revolution are saving up to send their son to business school. Another couple, whose son is a prize law student, glow with satisfaction. To insure his children's future, a peasant leaves his remote village to work in the quasi-legal urban job market. A farm family near Shanghai feels manhandled by the privatizing economy. They sacrifice to send their daughter to high school. China 21 introduces otherwise anonymous people whose spark and initiative are changing their country. 　　It was shown on PBS stations during May, 2003 -- Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. In this four and a half hour documentary or filmic tavelogue, Ulrike Ottinger tries to impart new ways of seeing a foreign culture. "In my previous films I have dealt with the themes of exoticism, minorities and their differing role behaviour within their own culture. Now I am interested in expanding this theme, in getting to know a 'real exoticism' in a foreign land and in a different culture. I am attempting to conduct a visual discourse with my camera about exoticism as a question of point-of-view. 　　In making the film, I was influenced by Chinese naturepainting: by the use of the scroll, which not only demands a different method of painting, but a different way of viewing - rolling out the scroll, focusing in on details, wandering to and fro, viewing piecemeal. So if I was filming a market square, for example, I'd pan very slowly and steadily across the square, rather than trying to capture the image in toto. 　　– Ulrike Ottinger

Like most of the cinematographies in the world, Georgian cinema witnessed, in the mid-20th century, the appearance of a distinguished generation of filmmakers. Some years after the great waves taught in film books, the films by filmmakers from the region started being part of the programs of the most important festivals. One of those was the first feature by Rekhviashvili, one of the cases in which the formalism of the time crossed paths with a filmmaker preoccupied by politics, ethics and the arrival of modernization. Told from the perspective of a young student who returns to his native Georgia, the film shows the struggle of the people against a foreign company that tries to exploit the natural resources of their lands for commercial purposes.
