Henrik is a young father who lives in Stockholm, constantly plagued by nightmares with his deceased mother. One day, he receives the news that his father, father, who lives in a remote village, it is drowned and died. The circumstances of drowning are mysterious. Henrik travels to the village to investigate the cause of his death. To find out more about the drowning and on his father, the door to the unknown and open. Shadows of the past emerge, returning to this world for one reason only: revenge.

Elad Keidan’s “Himnon” (Anthem), a droll 36 minute observation on a day in the life of a man from Jerusalem who goes out to buy milk and comes back hours later with his life turned around from the bleak into the hopeful, captivated the hearts of the Cinefondation jury. Hou Hsiao Hsian, who presided over the jury, must’ve found the film right up his alley: with long takes and extreme long shots it is indeed almost Taiwanese in style. But the quirky storyline and the abundance of heart and belief emanating from the movie may remind viewers of “The Band’s Visit”, last year’s Cannes darling, also made in Israel. This is the first time an Israeli film wins the Cinefondation. But 2nd and 3rd prizes were won four times previously, so this is the fifth prize for an Israeli filmmaker in the competition’s 10 years existence. (This is also the first time a movie from Jerusalem’s Sam Spiegel Film School wins there after all previous Israeli winners were made at The Tel Aviv University Film School. Luckily I teach at both).

Director Henri-Georges Clouzot's maiden feature-length effort was the intricate mystery thriller The Murderer Lives at Number 21 (L'Assassin habite au 21). Businesslike homicide detective Wens (Pierre Fresnay) goes on the prowl for a methodical mass murderer, who seemingly manages to be everywhere at once. Following a confusing trail of clues to a seedy boarding house, Wens disguises himself as a clergyman in order to gain the confidence of the boarders, hoping that one of them will make "that fatal slip." All of the boarders are eventually taken into custody, only to be released when the murders continue unabated. Wens cracks the case when he figures out that the seemingly contradictory clues are the by-product of a bizarre conspiracy. Filmed in 1942 under wartime conditions, The Murderer Lives at Number 21 was finally released in the U.S. five years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
