Reiji Saito uses a camcorder to capture the details of everyday life in Tokyo and other parts of Japan. He layers snippets of the environment, often abstracted to transcend their function as straightforward records of reality.
By manipulating spatial and temporal scales within each frame, the artist urges the viewers to question their perception of scale and significance, provoking contemplation on what it means to “see” or “capture” a moment.
This dissolution of form challenges the viewers to consider how much of a moment is preserved versus imagined, and engages them in an oscillation between subjective memory and detached observation.
