Three Los Angeles addicts find themselves in something of a pickle when one of them, mistakenly, swallows all of their drugs; setting off a race against time to recover the drugs before they become desperately dope sick.

Florist Gwen is an employee in a flower wholesaler and is ensnared by her likable boss Joey, which the young woman does not mind. They both start an affair. The relationship with her constantly frustrated and stressful mother, Ellen, doesn't look that rosy. Thankfully, there is still her life partner Ron, the down-to-earth calm anchor of the family. While delivering flowers to the cemetery, Gwen falls into an open grave and passes out. When she wakes up again, an attractive and caring man bends over her. It is emergency doctor Lennard, a single widower with a lively teenage daughter whose wife was killed in a traffic accident a year ago. An ex-employee of her flower shop was then convicted. However, the circumstances remain mysterious. When the flower seller find out about this, she initially keep at distance. But then Gwen finds a red balloon in the garden with a message from the doctor's daughter Lilly to her dead mother, who breaks her heart, because she is a half-orphan herself.

本片是山中贞雄的遗作，也是他的“时代剧的庶民电影”的代表作之一。他在片中吸取了美国电影和法国电影的影响，并受到挚友兼老师小津安二郎的“小庶民电影 ”美学影响，将历史上江户时代的小人物形像注入现代庶民的语言、性格、行止、灵魂，成就了一部难得的社会现实主义的佳作。故事发生于十八世纪德川幕府时代，以悲凉调子诉说德川幕府时期低下层的生活，开头与结尾都是自杀场景，映照出旧时日本社会草根阶层的悲哀。另外，山中的剪辑流畅自如，视觉风格锋如日本绘画，演员表演也很自然。此片公认为山中最好的作品，也是他仅存的三部电影之一。

オムニバス形式の作品。ビデオ化の前にテレビ放映されている。 一本目「悪魔の理論」（監督／清水崇　出演／橘 実里） クラスメイトの女の子が浮気してると疑っている少年が彼女に盗聴器を仕掛ける。そして彼女が盗聴器を付けたまま自殺。少年が盗聴テープから知った事実は・・・ 「呪怨1・2」の清水崇監督。「呪怨」の時の爆発力こそないが、静かで哲学的な恐怖を描き出している。盗聴器のテープを聴きながら事件の真相に迫って行く演出にもっとこだわってくれるのかと思ったけど、監督の興味はもう少し違う方向にあるようだった。（☆☆１／２） 二本目「屋根裏の長い髪」（監督／三宅隆太　出演／馬渕英里何　北原雅樹） 好きな男性に尽くすがあまり捨てられる髪の長い大人しくて幼さの残るOLがある日・・・意外に面白かったです。オーソドックスな怪談もの。（☆☆１／２） 三本目「首吊り気球」（監督／小田一生　出演／橘 実里　初音映莉子） 不条理にして、ホラーメルヘンの趣きもある、楽しい作品。ある日突然「首吊り気球」（人の生首の形をした気球の化け物）が襲って来る！　というそれだけの内容ですが、町中に現われる首吊り気球のビジュアルだけで単純に楽しい！　面白怖い！　作品。シュールやなあ～。 「うずまき」に近いテイストの作品でした（☆☆☆１／２）。こういう世界、僕は大好きです。 三本トータルの満足度は（☆☆☆）。観て損はない作品集です。怪談好きは是非！
