Hamburg pre-teen Leo Vandenbroek is not amused when his mother, ER surgeon Pia, drags him to a godforsaken Bavarian village for her 'long overdue relaxing holiday'. In fact she rented from local doctor Peter Huber because he's married to Maria, who she learned in her recently deceased father's testament to be her illegitimate half-sister. Leo, who misses his daddy since Pia's career ruined her marriage, instantly bonds with Peter, and ultimately even becomes the glue to reconcile him with his father Karl, who is embittered since his wife's fatal disease.

In his first appearance on network television, Edgar Bergen hosts a Thanksgiving Day special featuring three of his partners in ventriloquism - Charlie McCarthy, Mortimer Snerd and the lesser known Podine Puffington (a life-size doll that Bergen would use as a comedy dancing partner). Orchestra leader Ray Noble becomes upset when Charlie tells him that Edgar has hired someone else as a pianist (who turns out to be the beautiful Diana Lynn) to perform a solo. In the last scene, Edgar and Charlie are the put on trial for witchcraft in Colonial Salem, Massachusetts and sentenced to be burned at the stake before escaping with the help of a fetching Indian maid.

In her former life, Eva Bernhardt was called Evelyn Frank and was a notorious brothel owner in Berlin. But then she decided to testify as a key witness against her husband and his business partner and was accepted into a witness protection program. With a new identity, she now lives as Eva in the Bavarian mountains and starts all over again. She settles into her new surroundings surprisingly quickly and soon makes friends. The two witness protection officers Ines Meder and Holger Nolting observe Eva skeptically and with a watchful eye. Ines in particular has some doubts about Eva's sincerity when she is introduced to her as her daughter. When Eva then wraps the manager of a restaurant around her finger, Ines is certain that Eva is playing a false game...
