Soni Rai lives a wealthy lifestyle in India with her businessman dad, Kedarnath and mom, Geeta, and longs for a brother, who she can tie a Raakhi on. She meets with the lollipop seller, Ramu, a street urchin, decides to make him her brother, and invites him to her house on Raksabandhan. When a delighted Ramu arrives there with a gift for Soni, this angers Kedarnath, and he has his servant remove Ramu from the premise. Shortly thereafter, Soni is abducted and held for a ransom of one Lakh rupees. Kedarnath, together with the Police, to go deliver the money, but are unable to meet with anyone. The kidnappers contact Kedarnath, admonish him for involving the Police, ask him to re-deliver the money, which Kedarnath agrees to do so. The money is delivered, but Soni is not released, and an additional demand is made for two Lakh rupees. The question remains, will the abductors ever release Soni alive, and who is behind this kidnapping?

Raja Saheb (Ashok Kumar) is a rich man, strict father to sons Virendra (Sunil Dutt) and Mahendra. One day, Mahendra has a big fight with his father and dies of shock afterwards. Virendra leaves home and falls in bad company with Pran. Later, Virendra falls in love with a poor girl (Nutan), eventually deciding to marry her. At home, a lonely Raja Saheb falls ill. When Virendra tells his father about his love, his father reveals his own past: He was in love with a poor girl, who died leaving a daughter (Padmini) behind, who dances on the roads to earn a living. Virendra decides to bring his sister home.

Deep Sharma lives a very poor lifestyle with his widowed mom, Radha, and a younger brother, Ashok, who he would like to become a Judge. Ashok is married to Lakshmi (Nirupa Roy) and is a caring and loving husband. They have a young son, Munna (Daisy Irani).

When a fire breaks out, three children lose their father and get separated from each other while escaping. However, when the siblings reunite, they vow to take revenge against their father's killer.

Jyoti, a girl found by the riverbank, is adopted by a gardener who works for a wealthy family. Years later, she finally finds her true identity amidst love, deceit and twists of fate.

Chhoti Bahen is the story about the delicate but powerful bond of love. Rajendra and Shekhar lose their parents, and the all they have is each other, and their younger sister Meena. Though in love, Rajendra swears that he will not marry till his younger brother and sister are settled. Shekhar falls in love with a rich girl Shobha. Meanwhile, Meena's marriage is fixed. Misfortune strikes when Meena meets with an accident and is blinded forever. Shekhar, pressed on by an impatient Shobha, marries her and they go away to live with her rich father. Rajendra loses his job. To support his poor blind sister, he is desperate for a job.
