Cédric Kahn's "Bonheur" is the eighth episode of the 9-part Arte series "Tous les garçons et les filles de leur âge", a series of medium-length (around 1h) made-for-tv movies about teenagers. An 85-minute version of "Bonheur" has been distributed as "Trop de bonheur" (a more satisfactory version, according to the director).

This Belgian sitcom in French, the title of which can be read as “happyness nearby or “- across“, is about a kind, motherly landlady, madame Irène, and her boarders, notably college students, and somewhat mischievous (Robert especially), except top-marks but conceited Jean-Philippe Beaulieu who is the only one from an upper-class family. They live together in a hilarious succession of pranks, misunderstandings, jealousy, accidents etcetera, which often involve outsiders as well.

This affectionate little drama captures the last summer before graduation, when these assorted film students and drama students must leave the protected world of college and venture out into the chaotic currents of everyday life. Each student has his own style and character - often chosen for maximum dramatic impact. For instance, Paul is permanently gloomy, and mopes around, invariably wearing a long coat. The others make fun of him, because he is so serious. Charly loyally helps a male friend of hers rid himself of the insistent attentions of a former girlfriend. Caroline is the romantic one of the bunch, and her adventures along those lines keep her fully occupied. Several of them insist that they will not compromise the purity of their cinematic and theatrical aspirations for mere monetary comfort, but when Luc and Nanou find that Nanou is pregnant, they reconsider their absolutist stance.

The life of Rosa Bonheur, a trailblazing feminist and artist who rose to fame in 19th century France, will be played by Melanie Laurent in a sprawling period movie directed by Fabienne Berthaud. The movie will shoot on location in Bonheur’s well-preserved atelier at her Château de By in Thomery, where she worked and lived for over 40 years, alongside her partner Nathalie Micas and later with Anna Klumpke, an American painter.
