Brakes is a dark, improv-based ensemble comedy set in London. Divided into two parts, it tells the story of each couple's relationship in reverse, starting with the break-ups.

Pete Hothead decides to buy a new car to replace his old beat-up jalopy. Meanwhile, his wife has won a new car on a television quiz show that is the same make and model as the car Pete purchases from a car-dealer. Pete arrives home and sees the car his wife won and mistakes it for the one he ordered from the dealer, but it is a different color. He drives it back to the showroom for a replacement, and that begins the first of many problems he is to encounter.

The police leadership is concerned about the increase in car thefts. The investigation of the thefts is entrusted to police captain Siliņš. Once, his fiancée and colleague Aija Kalniņa almost catches up with the criminals in her service car after a chase, but at the last moment they manage to escape. However, Aija manages to spot her eighteen-year-old brother Juris among the thieves. Hiding in the forest, the car thieves accidentally witness another crime—an attack on a woman. To justify himself in his sister's eyes, Juris sets out to find the criminal and is killed.
