Cathy Baikas is a woman of Greek heritage who lives in Sydney, Australia with her three-year-old daughter. When her daughter's father kidnaps the child and takes her back to Greece, Cathy discovers the authorities can do little to help her. She turns to the media. The editor of a major daily newspaper proves sympathetic to Cathy's problem and begins giving her case press coverage. The film is based on a true story.

As Valentine's Day approaches, Cathy, ever the romantic, becomes passionately consumed with thoughts of hearts, flowers and candle-lit dinners.

Cathy is a former prostitute who has come to a little village in Provence. She falls in love with a young farmer, Simon. Her former pimp, Tony, finds her and forces her to work again for him. Cathy tells the truth to Simon who frightens Tony with the help of others villagers. As the couple celebrate the end of Cathy's nightmare, Tony gets killed in a car crash.

Cathy's preparations for an idyllic, romantic vacation with her boyfriend, Irving, go awry.
