Tom Chen, an affluent Chinese American, decides to celebrate the anniversary of his divorce with a dinner party. When his intended guests cancel, he impulsively invites the two Mexican day laborers, Javier and Diego, who are working in his yard, to join him instead. But as the three men are settling into the evening, finding connections and differences in their respective American stories, two of Tom’s original guests show up after all, and the resulting clash of cultures and beliefs takes the evening to new heights—and depths—of desire, hedonism, and conflict.

Mexican day labourers become unexpected dinner guests at their well-ordered employer's intimate and drunken gourmet dinner, in toned-down, aesthetically acute American indie. When the expected guests cancel their attendance at the Chinese dinner Tom is planning, he pays his two workers (the boisterous, Americanized man Diego and the homesick rookie Javier) to stay and eat. When the others show up despite all, as the tequila and expensive wines flow, the evening turns into a kind of showdown, featuring dancing, flirting, and card games. Steven Doughton examines the dynamics of an unequal party where class, background, ethnicity, and money create hierarchies while the longing for human encounters knocks them out. Van Tassel claimed to have combined alien guidance with the writings of inventor/physicist Nikola Tesla, and other controversial science, to build an electromagnetic time machine he dubbed “The Integratron.” Was he insane? Or could the dome really break through the boundaries of space, time, and energy? FBI agents worked against Van Tassel and the alternative community that formed out of his work.
