任老乐的女儿和李老大的儿子要结婚，可在喝订亲酒的这天，两家却吵翻了。任家要招婿，李家想娶媳，互不相让。还是任老乐有眼光，出了个好主意，要两家凑钱，合买一台手扶拖拉机，这样既成全了孩子的婚事，又添了个好劳力，两全其美。谁知这事却遭到老伴乐婶和李老大的反对。任老乐既当不了老伴的家，也做不了亲家的主，最后，他只得壮着胆子，用房料换了台手扶拖拉机。 就在李老大家上梁之喜的时候，任老乐的拖拉机开来了，一下把众人都吸引走了，闹得李老大好不败兴。他一气之下，把会开拖拉机的儿子拽回了家。天下大雨，拖拉机停在空场动不了窝，急得任老乐团团转，他总算把拖拉机拖回了家，又被乐婶关在门外。但是任老乐的苦心到底没有白费，那台手扶拖拉机还真给他争了口气。同李老大的锄把子“竞争”了两个回合，大获全胜。第一次是运肥，弄得李老大“独吞”不成，却累了个四脚朝天；第二次是帮工，使李老大的“竹杠”没敲成，自己倒帮了困难户弯人的大忙。后来任老乐又跟弯人合开了篾器作坊，搞起了多种经营，小日子眼瞧着往上发。为了发家，李老大又订了门亲，因为那家闺女长得五大三粗，还陪送一条带崽的牛。
