Returning to his signature technique of scratching directly onto film, Pierre Hébert creates a new experimental work of dazzling flashes and sudden apparitions, in which animated figures emerge and vanish like lightning. A human form, suspended between falling and taking flight, sets in motion a dizzying ballet of birds and flies that unfolds in five movements punctuated by fragments of poetry. The intoxicating song of the wood thrush gives way to the shrill crash of insects striking a window. Two opposing impulses collide: the desire for freedom and the feeling of being trapped. Drawing inspiration from the principles of the musical fugue, the great Québécois filmmaker crafts a striking allegory of serious illness. A work dedicated to the memory of Claude Beaugrand (1949–2023), who recorded part of the soundtrack.
