An animated adaptation of Daijiro Morohoshi's masterpiece, which shocked the 70's Japanese sci-fi manga world with its rich ancient history pedantry and the charm of its elaborately constructed worldview. The production of the main animation is Asiado of "Chibi Maruko-chan". The director is Tomomi Mochizuki of "Dirty Pair FLASH2". A young boy, Takeshi, is guided by a mysterious old man, Takeuchi, from Nagano to ancient Izumo. Takeshi gets lost in a dark world while visiting famous places related to ancient mythology. So Brahman, the will of the universe, began to tell Takeshi a startling fact.

Akira Kiyota (Ryusuke Nakamura), an ordinary salesman with poor performance and heavy consumer-loan debt, feels crushed by the harshness of reality—far from his wild days as a former biker gang leader. One night, while entertaining clients at a club, Kiyota loses his temper and punches a customer. The club happens to be protected by his high school classmate Kenji Hosokawa (Sho Ikushima). Kenji knocks out the rampaging Kiyota with an ashtray. When Kiyota wakes up, he finds himself in Kenji’s office. Kenji invites him into his yakuza group, telling him this might be his one chance to turn his life around…

とある湖畔の町の一寺の住職として、三十五歳の僧侶は、その日その日を、寺務と勉学と、仏との対話のうちに送っていた。僧の身辺の世話をする先代、先々代、いやもっともっと昔から、この寺に仕えてきた老婆の存在は、寺そのものともいえる。僧と老婆の静かな生活ー一。この、美しい、結晶のように、凍結した“生活・時間”と僧の内側の世界は、何が起ろうとも乱れることはなかった。ある雨の激しい日、一人の少女が疲れきった足をひきずって、寺の石段を登り、本堂の前で力尽き、倒れた。僧によって救われた少女は、行くあてもないまま、寺にとどまった。老婆は、我が娘のように少女を愛した。仏の慈愛にも似た、その深い愛に、少女の過去に受けたであろう心の傷も治癒され、次第に寺の生活に馴染んでいった。夏の盛りのある日。寺の裏山で銃声が聞こえ、一人のハンターの青年が現われた。その青年は少女をひと目見て以来、心を奪われてしまった。そして、青年と少女は、森の中で結ばれた。最初は多少の抵抗を示した少女だが、この自分にふさわしい青年の愛を受け入れた。一月。涼しい風の吹きぬける本堂で語りあっていた青年と少女は、自然に抱きあい、激しい愛撫の世界へと没入した。その時、偶然通りかかった僧侶は、その場を目撃し、愕然と立ちすくむのだった。しかし、その後の生活は外見的には、何の変化もみられなかった。初秋の気配か忍びよる頃。僧は突然、断食の荒行に入るといい本堂に坐りこんだ。何故、急にそのような荒行に入るのか、老婆にも、少女にもわからなかった。一日、一日と僧は衰弱していった。青年と少女は、その機が熟したので、寺を出る決心をした。輝かしい朝。若い二人の“信頼”が一つの生活に向って歩き始めた。その間にも僧は衰弱していき、やがて力尽き、本堂の床に死んだ。その死顔は“餓鬼”であった。老婆が焼く枯葉から、白い煙が低くたなびき、光がゆれ、影が動いた。境内は静かだった。何事もなかったかのように……。
