遥か遠い昔、日本列島の北端に北の浜という村落があった。漁師のさぶろうしは村落の長の娘ゆのと相思相愛の仲だったが、身分の違いから結ばれなかった。そこで婚礼の日にゆのを略奪、嵐のなかを舟で逃げたのだった。気がつくと二人は鬼の岬へ漂着。名代衆の長老・くっくねの爺に保護されるが、よそ者ということで岬の浜の長・頭屋の屋敷へ連行され、裁きを受けることになった。頭屋はまずさぶろうしに“お石とり”のためしを与えた。岬の突端から荒波に飛び込み、海底の石を取ってくるのだ。くっくねの助言もあって、さぶろうしは見事成功した。次のためしは“喪屋ごもり”。死体置場に満月の夜まで監禁されるのである。強靭なさぶろうしの肉体には何匹ものヒルが吸いついた。その間ゆのは頭屋の屋敷に奉公していたが、ある晩さぶろうしは我慢できずに縄を引きちぎり喪屋を逃げ出した。頭屋は三つめのためしとして嵐のなか小舟で漁をしてくるよう命じた。それも大漁でなければならないという。ゆのは体をこわし、くっくねが預ることになった。今度こそさぶろうしは死んでしまうのではないかとゆのは半狂乱になるが、霧の中彼は一匹の大魚を持って帰ったのだった。その頃村ではジャビと呼ばれるはやり病が蔓延していた。これにかかると体中が小豆色に腫れて、やがて死んでしまう。ある晩ゆのは再び屋敷に連れていかれ、頭屋の顔がジャビに冒されていることを知った。頭屋は臨終の際にくっくねの爺や口走りのばんば、さぶろうし、ゆのの前でこの岬に伝わる悲劇を語り始めた。頭屋の先祖は南から舟で渡って来たが、途中で鮫の群れに襲われて船底の年寄りや病人、子供を餌食にしたのだった。岬の者が代々ジャビにかかるのはその祟りだという。呪われた血を断ち切るにはよその国の女に汚れのない子供を産ませるよりなかった。ばんばもまた北の浜から連れてこられた女だったのだ。頭屋はさぶろうしとゆの、くっくねの爺に岬の将来を託し、自らの体を海へ投げ込むよう命じたのだった。
