The descent into hell begins for Edouard, a disillusioned marginal, when he loses his job, and his wife leaves with his son. His meeting with a mysterious stranger, who claims to work for the secret services, leads him to commit the irreparable. Was it a trap or just a symptom of his madness? There is doubt...

Sitting at a table in an empty room, a man listens to an interrogation tape. It relates to how the man was found in Turin, doesn’t know his name and was locked away in a psychiatric institution. Characters from his possible past are used to find out who he is. He is taciturn, mumbles an answer now and then, and gives the impression that he actually knows some of the details, but quickly forgets others. We are shown photos of places where he may have been and follow him being given a number of simple language and maths tests which the detective employs to solve this mystery.

Edith, a young orphan, is exploited as a waitress and bullied by her adoptive father. But she has a dream: she wants to become a star. When she leaves her obnoxious father for Vienna, Harry is absent. She nearly gets seduced by a libidinous man but, after a narrow escape, she gets a job from Treberg, the owner of the restaurant she had dined in. Treberg finds her there, hires her as a dancer and the pair soon meets tremendous success. A star is born but, realizing that he comes second to her, he prefers to vanish.

Yvan, forty, finds his life thrown into turmoil on the day a young stranger falls down dead in the yard of his house. Yvan lives isolated in the countryside and so he finds himself at home with the body of a man whom he doesn’t even know. Confused by this event, he carries out a series of incoherent or unreasoned actions, and little by little the situation becomes irreversible.
