The story of an immigrant Spanish family in Germany. When Isabel's parents decide to go back to Spain, she chooses to stay in Germany. After she meets Manuel, who is half Spanish, she starts to feel homesick.

It's been few days since Phiona came back from Madrid, a metaphorical city where she was alienated from the outside world for three years. After a day-long friendly conversation with her snobbish cousin Yves takes a turn for the judgmental regarding the decisions that made Phiona go to Madrid in the first place, their friendship is put at odds.

In Spain during the civil war. The American journalists Erin Wright and Robert Minelli enjoy their lives in bars. Then the courageous journalist Jonathan Tyler arrives - and shortly after disappears. Erin and Robert decide to continue his dangerous story and get drawn into a conspiracy.

Ramiro makes a quick trip to Madrid to decide about the life of his father, who is in a coma and with whom he has never had much of a relationship.

This cinematic travelogue consists of three parts. In the first part, texts and small maps are our guides through Madrid in 1936. We see pictures of daily life against the background of the fascist shillings. A sad portrait of destroyed houses, the search for survivors under the rubble, and children's corpses in small wooden coffins. Central to the second part is the defence of liberty. Images from the front alternate with fragments of the besieged city. The last part deals with the aid given to and still needed by the town; an appeal is made to give money for medicines. This film breathes an unfaltering belief in a favourable close: unconditional victory. At the time, the film was a great success and yielded a lot of money for medical aid to Spain.

When David Lean made his film Doctor Zhivago (1965), he realized that it would be impossible to do location shooting in Moscow. Instead, he found a location on the plains outside Madrid, Spain and built a set to look like the Russian capital. This promotional film gives viewers a short look at the set under construction.
