Mariah "Mo," a biracial Black woman, is a pro at taking care of her friends' feelings before her own, but now that she's approaching 30, it's time for Mo to take up space and become the main character of her own life - all while in the bathroom of her best friend, Britney's, 30th birthday party.

In an empty room with a red carpet, there is a huge birthday cake. That is the setting in which Lola Young performs her song Messy in a minimalistic and trenchant style. Director Sarah Dattani Tucker does without close-ups and has the singer perform in and with the room.

A holiday celebration with the extended family gets stretched to the breaking point in this comedy from Germany. Sara is happily married to Jan, though this wasn't always the case -- Sara is Jan's second wife, while Sara has three ex-husbands, Gunnar, Andi and Erich, and she and Jan are raising children from each of their previous marriages. Jan is less than thrilled with the prospect of spending the holidays with Sara's mother, but things get worse when he learns his wife has planned a surprise for Christmas eve -- they'll be joined by Gunnar, Andi and Erich, as well as Erich's new wife Pauline, Andi's current spouse Rita and his own ex-wife, Eva. To call the atmosphere uncomfortable is an understatement, and things only get worse when Sara announces she's pregnant, which is quite troubling for Jan since he's been waiting for the right time to tell her he had a vasectomy several months before.

Lola is an expert at managing the mess—just not her own. She's a reluctant mother, a flighty romantic partner, and perpetually annoyed by her insufferable coworkers.Her carefully controlled chaos is upended by the arrival of Kayla, a beacon of millennial optimism, who represents everything Lola is not. When Kayla moves in next door and then into her office, Lola's defenses are breached. Her unwavering kindness and success holds up a mirror, forcing Lola to ask a terrifying question: at what point do we stop blaming the world for our unhappiness and start untangling the mess we've made of ourselves?
