If Méliès had a son, it would be Michel Gondry. A brilliant jack-of-all-trades, his eccentric talent convinced the creative elite of international pop music to entrust him with their music videos (Björk, the Rolling Stones, Daft Punk, The White Stripes, Beck). He charted his own course in Hollywood -without ever renouncing his rather crazy style- and became one of the rare Oscar-winning French filmmakers (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). His work is a constant praise of wonder through craftsmanship, its humanist ambition also a political act.

Michel has lived in a psychiatric hospital for many years. Blaise Othnin-Girard is fascinated by this figure outside any canon, including those to which a forced isolation would like to reduce him. Art, love, friendship in Michel's words seem different. "It seems to me that paradise ... is a love that pierces your belly and makes you really happy ... a feeling like an explosion of love in a faraway place. It's a place where you can enjoy, paradise." The director has not seen Michel since the therapeutic apartment in Mâcon in 2001, where he lived before some problems arose. He finds him now at the hospital in a Complex Psychiatry Unit: a closed and silent sector. His words reveal themselves between pain and resistance, humor and lucidity, hinting at a love affair between impeded bodies.

Michel is a perfectly normal child - except that he's a little four-eyed, furry ball of a monster who has both his father's and his mother's eyes. Yet everyone in this animated series for children 6 to 10 considers Michel as normal. He may be a little ... 'different' ... and only speak in grunts, but that's certainly nothing to make a fuss about. Michel enhances the lives of his friends and relatives because he's different - and children who watch the show will see being different as something positive.

Adapted from Jules Verne's 1876 novel Michael Strogoff, the film tells the tale of a Russian courier named Michael Strogoff who has to dash across Russia with a vital message for the tsar's brother, wrestling with bears and fighting off ferocious Tatar rebels along the way. Captured by the Tatars, he is brought before their leader and blinded with a red hot sword by the executioner.
