本片取材于美国近半个世纪以来最重大的一桩涉及媒体的案件，也许就是发生于1967年的所谓的"五角大楼文件"案。当时的国防部长罗伯特．麦克纳马拉设立了一个专门工作小组，编写1945至1967年间美国对越政策的历史。小组由国防部人员和其他政府机关的人员以及若干独立合同工作者组成。报告中没有对任何人的采访；全部研究都是依靠文件进行。最后于1969年脱稿的报告洋洋洒洒，长达7000多页。它被人称为"五角大楼文件"。“智库"兰德公司的工作人员埃尔斯伯格看到的"五角大楼文件"中的内容以及其它一些原因，使他对美国在越南实行的政策产生怀疑。他暗中复制了报告，将其转给《纽约时报》和《华盛顿邮报》的记者并公开进行了连载。当时的尼克松总统的政府要求法院下令，禁止继续刊载，这是美国历史上第一次法院事先制止报纸发表某一具体文章。这场长达近1年的官司最后以“五角大楼文件"最终被《纽约时报》、《华盛顿邮报》和全国各地其他报纸刊登而告终，没有因此引起国家安全问题。
