Two middle-aged couples live in two-handed village huts: the Zvyagintsev's and the Arefyev's. Once the wives, tired of family life, decided to exchange husbands. Between old neighbors and good friends, a cheerful quadrille begins with a constant change of partners. Without wanting it, a lonely woman Makeyevna takes part in it for the last time, slowly dragging bricks from the Zvyagintsev's yard.

A forester tends to his ailing wife. The sudden arrival of guests who have come for a hunt prompts him to recall how they met—their shared quadrille, and everything that followed.

Three boys, Jura, Lenya and Jeanne, visit a village. They meet Tonya, a girl with good dancing skills, and bet to win her love. Tonya develops feelings for Lenya, which he later realises to be real.

A sparkling four-way affair overflowing with dialogue that showcases writer-director Sacha Guitry’s wit, Quadrille stars Guitry as a magazine editor whose longtime girlfriend (whom he hopes to make his fiancée) is uncontrollably drawn to a handsome American movie star. Meanwhile, a discerning reporter (Jacqueline Delubac) watches from the sidelines with amusement and provides the final corner of this romantic rectangle.
