On an isolated volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic, three thirty-something codependent friends, from very different backgrounds, confront their doubts about motherhood, family and death in a joyful chaos.

A worn-down office worker, Takagi, meets a Taiwanese woman, Huimin, during a business night out and becomes drawn to her. When she suddenly disappears and dangerous men start hunting for her, Takagi discovers she’s involved in a criminal case linked to a valuable piece of porcelain. With the help of a doctor, Saya, he follows Huimin’s trail all the way to Taiwan, risking everything to uncover the truth.

Tim Boerhave, a philosophy lecturer, loses his legs in a bomb attack. Who is responsible? The last image before the explosion is that of a large black dog with a sardine tin attached to its collar, jumping up against the kitchen door. For Tim, the question of who did it is less urgent than the question of why. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. He can't think of any reason why he was targeted. Christina Fisher arrives in Sardinia to spend a holiday with her university friend, Francesco. As they are touring the island, they are trapped by mountain terrorists. Francesco is kidnapped, but Christina is permitted to leave. She is determined to contact the police, but is persuaded not to by Francesco's best friend, Gambino. Together they try to find the kidnappers, but she becomes suspicious of everyone including Gambino. Confused and paranoid, she sets out alone to contact the police.
