1926年11月，来到中国北京，赫定与中国学术界商议组织考察团对中国西北地区进行科学考察。当时的中国地质调查所所长翁文灏，北京大学学者徐旭生（徐炳昶）、袁复礼教授和周肇祥、刘复等代表中国学术界参加了与赫定的会谈。斯文·赫定生于瑞典首都斯德哥尔摩，少年时代起即立志做一名极地探险家。他对亚洲尤其感兴趣，从1890年至1908年曾经多次来到中亚特别是中国从事探险活动，曾经到过新疆、青海、内蒙古、西藏等地。他于1900年在新疆发现的楼兰古城遗址，引起了全世界地理学家、历史学家和探险家的关注。当然，赫定的这几次探险活动是在没有得到中国政府允许的情况下进行的。另外，他在探险和游记著作中附录的中国区域地图、照片等资料，在客观上适应了对中国抱有野心的帝国主义者特别是沙俄的需要，因此沙俄支持他对中国的考察并提供方便，学术界对此早有评说。 经过反复磋商，中国学术界同意与赫定双方共同组织考察团，由中国学术团体协会特组西北科学考察团理事会，依据合作办法监督并指挥考察团的一切事务。这次中国学术界与赫定共组西北科学考察团的决定，得到了中国政府的批准。1927年04月26日，在北京大学研究所国学门，周肇祥代表中国学术团体协会与赫定签署了含有19条合作内容和办法的正式协议。决议明确地规定了本次“考察之事项，主要为：地质学、地磁学、气象学、天文学、人类学、考古学、民俗学”。考察团由徐旭生任中方团长，赫定任外方团长，中方十人，瑞方四人，欧洲其他国家十人。1927年05月09日，考察团从北京出发踏上西行之路，历时八年之久，直到1935年才结束这次举世闻名的考察活动。几年当中，考察团在新疆、甘肃、宁夏和内蒙古进行了大规模的、系统的、多学科的综合性的考察，收获令世人瞩目。据此，赫定于1944年完成了他一部最重要的人类学著作《1927—1935年探险史》，概述了西北科学考察团的经历及取得的成就。 从有关的记载中，可以看到考察团拍摄电影的一些情况。考察团配备了电影摄影机，这是赫定几次在中国探险中首次使用的新设备。专门的拍摄人员是欧洲人李伯冷（Heh-Paul Libereng）,他既是出色的飞行员又是一流的摄影家。考察团在沿途和考察地拍摄了大量照片和胶片，记录的内容既有沿途各地的自然景观、人文景观、考察活动，又有西北人民的生活习俗、生产劳动、宗教活动。1927年07月，考察团在内蒙古百灵庙一带拍摄的记录买达尔圣节庙会等活动的底片长达1100米。拍摄工作得到当地人的帮助。1927年10月在额济纳河流域，赫定向土尔扈特郡王子提出，欲租一辆牛车将一条船从索果淖尔送到噶顺淖尔再运至森林中，以便在那里拍电影，王子不但满口应允，并表示不收取报酬。 考察团拍摄的一些影片曾经在某些场合放映。1929年01月，考察团回到北京作考察报告，北京大学的1200名师生参加。会上，周肇祥、刘复介绍了这次科学考察的有关情况，徐旭生报告了科学考察的进程，赫定着重汇报了考察取得的科学成果。作为这次考察活动的科学成果之一，考察团拍摄的电影在报告结束之后进行了放映。根据中国学术界与赫定达成的协议，考察团所拍影片第一须经理事会审查；第二须存副本一份于理事会，第三初次开映需在北京，未经审查者不得放映。遗憾的是，这些影片仅有很少部分在中国留存下来。西北科学考察团拍摄的人类学纪录片是中外学者合作的成果，可以说这是中国人类学片的萌芽时期。
