The story of Rachel, a young woman in her early 20s who lives with her Nigerian uncle (Danny Glover) and his American wife (Edythe Davis). When her aunt has had enough of her niece's free-spirited lifestyle, she kicks Rachel out of the house. Rachel is left to figure it out on her own, but quickly runs into Skeeter, a washed-up movie star whose life is surprisingly similar to hers. Together, they decide to "play a part" in hopes of both getting what they need.

父が残した悪名に追われた銀次が、十年振りに故郷へ帰る道すがら、年輩のやくざ刈田の仙太郎と知りあった。二人は目指す宿場にたどりついたところを強盗と間違われ、銀次は鉄砲に撃たれて甚兵衛の家にかつぎこまれた。仙太郎が甚兵衛の娘おちかに語ったところでは、彼には昔喧嘩で命を落した倅があった。これが銀次に似ていて、何か他人とは思えない。おせんもまた銀次に、ほのかな想いをよせるのだった。銀次の傷がいえると、仙太郎と銀次は両替屋銭屋庄兵衛門の用心棒に雇われたが、悪貸元鬼鮫一家の身内、片目の寅吉、三次が銭屋を強請りに来た。仙太郎は三次を捕えたが、銀次は寅吉をにがし、町の人々から疑いをうける。その上、祭の夜、鬼鮫の半蔵は庄兵衛門を掴え、寅吉、三次のお礼として土蔵から金を頂戴するぞと威した。彼はまた、その場にいた銀次に、お前は五両の金と引き換えに寅吉を逃がしたと素っ破ぬいた。鬼鮫一家は庄兵衛門の倉から、千両箱を引いて行く。それを止めにかかった仙太郎に、半蔵はまた、お前は島帰りの兇状持ちだと、かくれた事実を明らかにした。人々の非難をうけて、遂に意を決した銀次と仙太郎。金がほしければ、指定の一軒家に来いと言った半蔵の申出に、喧嘩支度をととのえる。だが庄兵衛門は仙太郎一人で行けと言う。遂に怒った銀次は、一人で指定の一軒家に走った。これを追う仙太郎は、卑怯な半蔵の飛道具で足を撃たれる。だが、その時銀次の一刀は、半蔵の上にひらめき、仙太郎の危急を救った。人々の疑いが晴れた日、銀次は仙太郎をのこしていずこともなく去っていった。
