Appropriately, her own 14th arrondissement (specifically Rue Daguerre) is a source of pleasure for the protagonist (Jasmine Thiré) and viewer, having been photographed carefully, beautifully, and lovingly. The first word that this all brought to mind way “playful,” and I’m pleased that my simple descriptor is something Varda would consider appropriate. Says her, “It’s playing a game with reality. The game is called cinema.”

Three Light Bulbs is a film that tells the story about an estranged father and daughter relationship. It sees Energy Saving, a global environmental issue on a microcosmic and human level.

Bibi, wanting to comfort her childhood friend Chichi after his breakup, invites their mutual friend A-Fei to join them. The three of them chat while making dumplings, but in all the playful chaos, their cherished childhood keepsake—a heart-shaped stone ring—disappears. They search the entire living room but find nothing. They start to suspect that the heart-shaped stone might have been wrapped inside the dumplings. To make sure, Bibi and A-fei cook and eat the dumplings they had spent the entire afternoon making, leading to a heated argument with Chichi. In the end, they spend the entire afternoon in vain, leaving only three "dumplings" on the table.

This uninspiring drama was unfortunately the last feature film directed by Richard Marquard and was released posthumously. Bob Dylan plays the retired and reclusive rock star (there's a stretch) Billy Parker who falls for aspiring rocker Molly McGuire (Fiona) and takes her under his wing on his tour of England to benefit from his experience. When Molly is "discovered" by lecherous music promoter James Colt (Rupert Everett), Billy flies the coop back to his stateside chicken farm while Molly makes music magic. Billy and Molly are eventually reunited when she returns for a triumphant tour of the United States. Songs from Dylan, Neil Young, Shel Silverstein, Andy Goldmark, Tony Swan, Wang Chung, John Dexter, Cyril Neville, John Hiatt, and Steve Jolley help the thin script and uninspired thesping. The film opens up with the 1982 hit Tainted Love from Soft Cell. Musicians Ian Dury and Richie Havens are included in the acting cast. One can only wonder if the feature was just wrapped up too quickly after the untimely death of Marquand from a stroke at age 49 on September 4th, 1987.
