2012年秋季NHK日剧SP中，函馆市电的司机岩馆修一（吉田荣作）和妻子瑞惠（奥贯薫）过着二人生活。结婚近20年的他们之间有着“围绕孩子的过去”，但一直避而不谈，就这样相伴度过了漫长时光。 与此同时，在函馆的一家产院里，21岁的大学生渡辺早智（南沢奈央）抱着刚出生的婴儿不知所措。孩子的父亲、立志成为音乐家的大学生岛崎拓海（渡辺大知）说去筹措生产费用后便离开了，孩子出生后也不见回来。 圣诞夜前夕，早智下定决心，抱着婴儿冲出了医院。她偶然搭乘的函馆市电，司机正是修一。修一目送早智在终点下车后，开始检查车内，竟发现了被留下的婴儿。 在寻找抛弃婴儿的母亲过程中，这对夫妇尘封已久的过去被触动……
