Nightride is a dryly humorous real time one shot thriller set on the midnight streets of Belfast. It places us in the driver’s seat with smalltime dealer Budge as he tries to pull one last deal with cash borrowed from a dangerous loan shark. When the handover goes catastrophically wrong, Budge finds himself in a race against time to find his missing product and get a new buyer before the loan shark tracks him down.

Follows the incredible story of a 1942 effort to to save over 100 Jewish children from a deportation camp just outside of Lyon.

Now is here, here is now, Irish folk rockers Clannad sang years ago in their theme song to the television series Robin of Sherwood. In the spirit of those lyrics, James Benning’s filmis an attempt to join time and space into an indivisible whole, both on the screen and in the viewer’s mind. The real-time visual record of a day turning into night is disarmingly unambiguous and charmingly poetic, yetmaintains a mathematical precision. Unobtrusively filmed deep within a forest, where the silence is broken only by birdcalls, Nightfall is reminiscent of H.D. Thoreau’s celebrated chronicle of lifenear Walden Pond, away from the trappings of civilization. In an age of over-stimulated perceptions, Benning’s one-take film aims only at purity.

I’d like to film as far away as possible, in Xanghai for instance, and describe, using voice-over, with an extreme precision, everything I know about my street in Paris, in the 20th District, which is quite mestizo and where Muslims and Africans constitute the majority. There’s a school, three bars, and a building recalling the Babel tower. My intention in thus to generate some disorder using the differences and similarities of those worlds.
