Through the eyes of people who have gotten to know the East German state from many varied viewpoints. Life Behind The Wall features new sources of previously unreleased footage, including amateur's films, photos and documents that show a very different image of the German Democratic Republic. Life Behind The Wall is the work of a unique team of young authors, directors and scientists from both east and west Germany who seek to portray a candid depiction of what forty years of life was like under socialism and behind the Berlin wall.

The CIA discovers a Russian plot to assassinate five defectives on the Christmas Day, but they do not know who they are. The defective Alex Holbeck is recruited in Paris by CIA and sent to East Berlin to steal the scrambler of the Enigma, the machine used by the soviet intelligence for communication. On the arrival, Holbeck discovers that the KGB and the East Germany government know that he has arrived and his contacts are arrested. Holbeck meets his former lover, the lawyer Karen Reinhardt, and she gives a safe house to him. The Russian agent Dimitri Vasilikov and the East German agent Kurt Limmer try to find Holbeck's whereabout using different methods, while Karen seduces Dimitri to get the information about the location of the soldiers that Holbeck needs. However Holbeck does not know that the CIA has the scrambler and he is only a bait to convince the Russians that they do not have it.

Fausto enters an orphanage and is initially bullied, but then makes friends with a new bunkmate, Raymond. He is apprenticed to Mietek, a tailor in the Jewish quarter, who teaches him the trade. Fausto charms everyone in the quarter, and falls in love with Tonie, the mechanic's daughter. He starts making outrageous suits for publicity and, after dressing Tonie, decides that he wants to be a famous couturier.
