Since his wife died, Inspector Louis Baroni (Philippe Noiret) has become a virtual recluse, preferring the solitude of his quiet house to the company of others. His period of mournful contemplation is broken when he is called out to look into the suspicious death of Madame Morlaix who, according to her husband Edouard (Michel Serrault), fell from an upstairs window. Curious to find out more, Baroni begins his inquiry.

To earn money for married life, a young engaged man takes a job as an engineer on a privately operated oil drilling rig in the far North of Russia. A friend's letter brings the sad news that his fiancée has already married someone else and in desperation he quits his job and flies back to Moscow. A pineapple stings a child’s tongue, accompanied by a child’s perspective glimpsing tough family issues. The understated cinematography immerses itself in the common life, often framed from behind doors and windows. A slow long shot moves from the living room to the kitchen, capturing the entire domestic space shared by a mother and child. The camera calmly lingers from the mother’s hands cutting a pineapple to her worried face, naturally weaving cinematography into the narrative. The restrained use of sound further enhances the child’s limited perspective, with phone calls and conversations unfolding into the more complex dilemmas of the adult world.

Newly divorced, Achilles Pumpkinseed lives alone in the house left to him by his deceased mother. Depressed and adrift, he spends his days smoking pot and watching television, usually alone but sometimes with his equally rootless friend Patroclus.
