The picture of a series of seemingly identical houses under the mist of Nizhni Taguil, in that Asian part of Russia that is both beautiful and desolate, shows a city frozen in time and a group of young artists that seem to be in the same tune. There is among them a kind of solidarity to face unease –they gather to sing, dance or reflect on the future (or lack thereof) in the city that shelters them. In his fourth feature, Vadim Kostrov accompanies these melancholy characters over the course of one summer, with the aim of exploring their aspirations in a context that proves unfavorable to them. In each of the film’s scenes, all of them tainted with genuine warmth, the director confirms his remarkable capability to turn that feeling of emptiness into cinema. Orpheus is, ultimately, the final depiction of young people about to penetrate into the meandering path towards adulthood.

High up in the Indian Himalayas, where even the birds fly low to avoid getting lost in the clouds, the soft-spoken Dev owns a sprawling estate of several orchards and lives in a colonial-style house with his family. He spends a lot of his time building human-sized wings which he puts on to take a quick morning flight over his land. One day, while walking through the estate, he discovers a single burnt apple tree. A few days later, more trees are burnt. Dev and his manager monitor the workers on the plantations and this leads to unrest. A group of nomads comes under suspicion and a corrupt police officer gets involved, while loyal men camp out in the orchards to keep a vigilant watch at night. Despite all these measures, a massive fire breaks out a week later and engulfs an entire mountainside of trees. In his search for the culprit, Dev resorts to armed violence. The slow burning of the orchards forces him to face the truth about himself and his family.

A stationary camera looks across a busy corner toward a store front marked "The Divan." The words "des fees" are beneath. A cortege of Arabs, about 20 persons in the party, walk past; the dignitaries are in front, attended by men with horns and drums. Coming in the other direction are local Swiss, who pay little attention, and a group of native-garbed Africans. The dozen or so well-dressed denizens of Geneva who are sitting on the steps of the Divan take it all in.
