Twenty-eight years after the fall of communism and on the eve of a new presidential election, Hungary has arrived at a political crossroads. Is the country about to embark on another four years of right-wing populism, with Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party remaining in power, or will former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány and his pro-European left-wing party prevail? Filmmaker Eszter Hajdú followed both campaigns, but also gained access to the personal life of Gyurcsány. The resulting unique and sometimes moving scenes reveal the exhaustive efforts made by the candidate and his wife to get Hungary to shift to the left. The results of this electoral battle were announced on April 8, 2018, but that does nothing to diminish the urgency of this film’s compelling central question: what motivates the right-wing voter? This is more than just a courageous and well-crafted account of a political battle. It’s a film for anyone seeking to better understand the rise of nationalism, in Europe or elsewhere. The fact that the names of some of the people who worked on the film don’t appear in the credits is testimony to the fact that Hajdú’s political portrait stepped on a lot of very sensitive toes.

On July 27, 1986, Queen performed the largest-ever stadium concert at the Népstadion in Budapest in front of 80,000 ecstatic fans. The concert was part of the famed Magic Tour, which was the last time the band toured with lead singer Freddie Mercury. Now, this original concert film has been remastered in high definition and features many of Queen's favorite tracks—"Bohemian Rhapsody," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "I Want To Break Free" and "We Are The Champions." In addition, this special cinema event is introduced by a documentary feature that gives the inside track on events leading up to the Budapest concert. With three years to go before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was the first Western rock concert performed in a stadium behind the then Iron Curtain. It was of such significance to the Hungarian authorities and film industry that a group of the country's top film cameramen and technicians were brought together to film it for posterity. Using archive footage from rehearsals, interviews with the band and on the road during the Magic Tour—some of which has never been seen before—this fascinating intro feature has been specially created for cinema release.

Hungarian Rhapsody (Magyar Rapszodia) is the first chapter of director Miklos Jancso's two-part dramatized history of Hungary, from the turn of the century, to World War II. The story is told from the vantage point of Gyorgy Cserhalmi, the son of a wealthy landowner. During World War I, Cserhalmi is instrumental in quelling an army mutiny. Upon realizing that he has been responsible for the deaths of several peasant conscripts, Cserhalmi vows to be a "man of the people" when hostilities cease. He joins a communist cell, but finds he is woefully out of place. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Cserhalmi's political viewpoint is governed almost exclusively by his vacillating emotions. The film is enhanced with a "Russian Roulette" leitmotif, not unlike the fatalistic throughline of Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter. Director Jancso followed Hungarian Rhapsody with Allegro Barbaro; both films were originally released in tandem, then redistributed as separate features. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
