汪文宣（吴楚帆 饰）带着家人逃难来到了重庆，他在一家出版社工作，收入非常的微薄，与此同时，汪文宣还患有肺病，这让本就不富裕的家庭雪上加霜。曾树生（白燕 饰）是汪文宣的妻子，在银行工作，她的收入比汪文宣高，可以这么说，这个家多亏了有曾树生，才能够支撑下来。 可是，曾树生的付出在汪文宣妈妈的眼里看来确实对他儿子的压迫，婆媳二人经常因此而产生争执，关系水火不容。汪文宣无法解决家里的矛盾，同时也为了得到安家费，只身一人去了兰州，最终，在那里，汪文宣病逝了。在他的坟前，曾树生和婆婆悲痛欲绝，两个伤心的女人终于在此时达成了共识。
