On March 29, 2023, Shaanxi Chang'an Athletic Football Club was dissolved due to financial debts, leaving the football-loving fans of Shaanxi—a region known for its rich history and passionate supporters—stranded without a club to cheer for. Unwilling to accept this fate, former Chang'an Athletic board member Zhang Wei sought inspiration from European football's membership model to establish China's first-ever fan-owned football club—Chang'an United.
