Jean Renoir… Une légende du cinéma français. Il est né en 1894, presque en même temps que le cinéma. Tout au long de sa carrière, il aura réalisé trente-huit films, pour la plupart devenu des classiques – entre autres, La Grande illusion, La Bête humaine, La Règle du jeu ou French Cancan. Magistral directeur d’acteurs, il a fait tourner les plus grands : Michel Simon, Jean Gabin, Louis Jouvet… Perçu aujourd’hui comme un père spirituel pour un grand nombre de réalisateurs, Jean Renoir était en avance sur son temps. Il a inventé une grammaire visuelle en filmant la vie comme elle vient, sachant capter l’instant et la féérie de la réalité pour tenter de révéler la nature profonde de l’homme. Mais sa carrière de cinéaste et le chemin vers la reconnaissance ont été ponctués par une longue suite de rebondissements dramatiques et de remises en cause personnelles. Boudé par les producteurs au début des années 30, incompris du public, puis se hissant au sommet de la célébrité, Jean Renoir, longtemps écrasé par la figure de son père, le peintre impressionniste Auguste Renoir, a peiné à « se faire un prénom ». En exil à Hollywood pendant dix ans, mais rejeté par les majors américaines, il pensera même qu’il doit abandonner le cinéma. Avec Quand Jean devint Renoir, Alexandre Moix propose un portrait intime d’une grande finesse. Il réinterroge avec empathie la vie et l’œuvre de ce géant du cinéma, une personnalité débonnaire plus complexe qu’il n’y parait. Jean Renoir aimait à se comparer à un bouchon porté par le courant mais sa vie, pleine de péripéties, extrêmement romanesque, aura finalement été tout le contraire d’un long fleuve tranquille.

影片用细腻的笔触描绘了11岁少女在1987年的夏天发生的故事，忙于工作的母亲，生病住院的父亲。处在孩子和大人之间淡淡的分界线上飘荡的少女，一边窥视着大人的世界，一边感受到人们内心的痛苦。对死亡的好奇心和恐惧，活着是无可奈何的寂寞，渴求被人温暖。高兴、 开心、寂寞、恐惧、哀伤，从少女的视角浮现出各种各样的情感的闪光。

Made for television, this film consists of four parts: Part One, "The Last Christmas Dinner," is about the relationship between an old man and an old woman, both homeless. Part Two, "The Electric Floor Polisher," is an opera-like story of a woman who is obsessed with polishing her floors. Part Three is a musical interlude featuring Jeanne Moreau singing "When Love Dies." Part Four, "The Virtue of Tolerance," concerns an old man, his young wife, and how they come to terms when she has an affair with a man her own age.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is known and loved for his impressionist paintings of Paris. These paintings count among the world’s favourites. Renoir, however, grew tired of this style and changed course. This film, based on the collection of 181 Renoirs at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia,– examines the direction he then took and why it provokes such extreme reactions right up to today. Some claim they are repulsed by Renoir’s later works and some claim they are seduced. What may surprise many is that among the many artists who sought Renoir’s new works out and were clearly highly influenced by them were the two giants of the 20th century – Picasso and Matisse.
