The film is based on the eponymous 1960 novel by author Peter Weiss. In this autobiographical text, the author describes the years of his childhood and youth in Germany in the 20s and 30s as well as the flight of his half-Jewish family from persecution by the Nazis. This odyssey also portrays the young first-person narrator’s struggle for his artistic existence, as he was striving to establish himself as a painter and writer. In a free, sensual essay between fiction and document, realistic description and stylised invention, the film attempts to kindle today’s flame based on the past’s, and to create a new and vibrant third work from it.

The dentist Oscar has been married for five years and lives with his wife and adopted children. On the surface everything seems to be fine but Oscar is not a happy man. His wants a baby of his own flesh and blood but it's not working out. When he finds out that his wife has been deceiving him all these years he decides it's time for a change. Einar is a stockbroker who is very successful at work but not in his personal life. For the last couple of months Einar has been living at a hotel waiting for his wife to realize the terrible mistake she made by throwing him out. Katrin Rose returns from Sweden where she has lived for eight years. In Iceland Katrin has an eleven-year-old son, brought up by his grandmother and now Katrin wants him back. Katrin gets a job as a dentist's assistant intending to make a fresh start but her troubled past catches up with her. Both are being pursued by nameless people carrying arms. Who are these criminals? Why must the two of them hide and sleep at night with weapons in their hands? Is the child merely a figment of Lamine’s imagination? A desire made flesh? Narrated elliptically and associatively, La nuit et l’enfant tells of omnipresent danger and constant threats. The film moves between realism and dream: Almost documentary-like shots alternate with powerful, poetic imagery. In the 90s, the Djelfa region was a terrorist stronghold. Lamine says that life was different before the terrorists came. 1949年初，中国共产党在辽沈、淮海、平津三大战役都大获全胜，国民党在东北和华北控制局面全面溃败。1月21日，总统蒋介石宣布下野，由副总统李宗仁代理总统职务。李宗仁代理总统职务后，设法与中共谈判停战。 　　国民政府和谈代表团由张治中任团长，其他成员有邵力子、黄绍竑、刘斐、章士钊、李蒸；中共方面由周恩来任代表团团长，其他成员包括林伯渠、林彪、叶剑英、李维汉、聂荣臻。4月1日，国民政府和谈代表团乘飞机抵达北平南苑机场，中共代表团秘书长齐燕铭到机场接机，随后代表团抵达六国饭店。下午六时，周恩来率中共代表团与张治中会谈。 　　经过十多天谈判，国共双方草拟《国内和平协定（最后修正案）》，并商定于4月20日签字。南京当局19日发表广播，表示对和平协定未能全部同意，解放军渡江难以接受，于是国共和谈全面破裂。毛泽东、朱德发布《向全国进军的命令》，解放军挥军渡过长江，发动渡江战役，一举占领南京、上海等大城市，然后向华南、西南、西北各省进军。
