A small working-class town along the Loire river. Like his father and grandfather before him, 19 years old Pavel works at Martinsson, the local industry. He spends his spare time with Anja, his childhood friend, almost his sister, whom he secretly loves. And if Anja is going to pass her high-school degree, dreaming of emancipation, Pavel isn't worried: they grew up together, they will grow old together. It is meant to be. However, this beautiful horizon is soon to be darkened. While a social plan is announced at Martinsson, Anja is seduced by Antoine, the boss's son. For the first time in his life, Pavel is no longer sure of anything.

Two boys Michael and Joe become friends when Joe arrives at St. George's school in England as a refugee student. Both are Jewish but one has grown up in a middle class English home, while the other has grown up under the spectre of the growing Nazi movemement.

At the beginning of WWII, Virginia is sent to America by her parents to keep her safe. Now the war in Europe is over, it's time for Virginia (or Rusty, as she likes to be called) to come home. While she is glad to see her mother Peggy and tries to fit into her old life, her 'American ways' don't go down too well at home. When her father returns from war, he is desperate to have his life just the same as it was before, but he is forced to realise that his wife and his children are not the same people he left behind.
