该节目是一档展现当代作家精神风貌的人文纪录片。节目借由一位朋友拜访知名作家的形式，通过作家与朋友两天的对谈、走访、体验、观察，体现名人作家对时代及生活的认知与解读。作家与朋友间的对话涉及生死观、世道人心、故乡、青春叛逆等当下热点话题，问诊时代，以文学照亮日常。

中国当代文学已经成为世界文学版图的重要风景，像莫言的《高密东北乡》、贾平凹的《商州》、刘震云的《延津》、阿来的《嘉绒藏区》、迟子建的《冰雪北国》、毕飞宇的《苏北水乡》。这些文学风景植根于中国大地，吸取了中华文明的精华，丰富了世界文学的版图。 从2016年夏开始，北京师范大学纪录片中心主任张同道率团队历时两年，跟踪拍摄了6位作家回到故乡，回到文学现场的历程。摄制组也远赴日本、美国、欧洲多国，采访了30多位汉学家、翻译家、出版家、诺贝尔文学奖评委等国际知名专家，记录下中国文学向世界传播、莫言摘取诺贝尔文学奖的历程。 《文学的故乡》分为《莫言》、《贾平凹》、《刘震云》、《阿来》、《迟子建》、《毕飞宇》六部。历时两年，从冰雪北国到南方水乡，从青藏高原到胶莱平原，《文学的故乡》摄制团队跨越秦岭和黄河，跟随作家们回到故乡，揭开他们创作的秘密。 节目特色 《文学的故乡》主创追随6位文学大家，回到他们出生的村庄，回到文学创作的现场，还原他们的童年往事和创作历程，揭示了他们如何将生活的故乡转化为文学的故乡。
