A young woman dreads dying in the same bizarre way as her sister.

Helen Stoner needs the great man's help. She lives in a country mansion with her flamboyant and sinister guardian Grimesby Raylott, who has travelled abroad and brought home some souvenir livestock. Recently her sister Julia, about to be married and made by Raylott to sleep in a bed that was screwed to the floor, died in mysterious circumstances. Her final words referred to a "speckled band." Helen is fearful for her own safety and Holmes and Watson investigate.

A few years earlier when her sister was engaged to the same man, she died under mysterious circumstances with "the speckled band" being her last words. He brutish stepfather claims that questionable renovations to her room force him to move her into her dead sister's bedroom, and Helen seeks the aid of the Baker Street resident. After her visit Dr. Grimesby Roylott, her bullying stepfather, tries to intimidate Holmes into revealing the purpose of her visit, the Great Detective is more determined to investigate the case.
