瀬戸内海のとある高校を卒業した幸次は、幼馴染みの八重子が心をこめたセーターを着て大学入学のため上京した。ジャーナリスト志望の彼は大学の新聞部に入ったが、ここは田舎の高校の静けさと打って変わって切実な社会の波がひたひたと押し寄せ、若い彼の情熱を煽るのだった。新聞でも熱心な活動家の林伸子をみると地方でおとなしく花嫁勉強をしている八重子とは違う新しい魅力を彼は感ずるのだった。上級生の吉村を注進とする貧農の調査から伸子と特飲街を訪ねた彼は、そこに売られてきた少女春子を救う決心をする。一方八重子には孝次の家から兄専太郎の嫁にと話があるが、娘の園子から二人の仲を聞かされた母兼子は孝次の気持を確かめさせる為、金銭を托し旁々八重子に東京に行ってもらう。しかし八重子と会った孝次は金銭を受け取るなり春子の救出に走り廻る始末なので、八重子は隔たった二人の距離を痛感する。また世の中の複雑さは孝次を途方にくれさせた。春子の父からは更に多額な金銭を要求され、挙句の果は孝次と伸子の二人は特飲街の女を誘拐したとの嫌疑で警察の取調べを受けねばならなかった。身の潔白が晴れはしたが、孝次は重い心で帰郷した。八重子と専太郎の話は既に決まっていた。「兄貴と結婚するんやってね、おめでとう」とつぶやく彼に「ありがとう、孝次さんもお身体を大切に勉強してね」と八重子は答えるのだった。

Kara Ben Nemsi Effendi is a German television series broadcast from 1973 through 1975 in 26 parts and two seasons. It featured an adventurer probably inspired by British explorers Richard Francis Burton and T. E. Lawrence. The scripts were faithful to Karl May's Orient novels and the score is from Martin Böttcher who previously had composed the music for ten very successful Karl May films in cinema and in 1998 also for the two parts of Winnetous Rückkehr, also being aired by the German station ZDF.

The movie version of Whispers just does not do Dean Koontz` excellent novel justice, but it is still enjoyable and stuck fairly close to the original plotline created by Dean Koontz. The story is twisted and gruesome and has to do with a woman being stalked by a serial killer. Sounds simple, right? However the nasty, perverse elements of the story make this unique. This, again, was okay but if Koontz had scripted it would have been a lot better. The actress who played Hilary was about ten years too old for the part, had the wrong hair color (Hilary had long, black hair in the book) and I detected a faint British accent. Chris Sarandon was okay as Tony, nothing special, and the actor who played Bruno was very good, even though it wasn`t how I imagined Bruno. I suggest that anyone who may be interested in seeing this, read the book first if you really want to. It`s much better than the movie.

The Whisperers stars Dame Edith Evans as a lonely old woman whose imagination is getting the better of her sanity. She insists that she hears "whisperers" plotting and planning against her at all times; she also believes that these imaginary entities are spying on her. So suspicious is Ms. Evans of her nonexistent whisperers that she fails to notice the very real predators around her. She is robbed of her life's savings by a nasty "friend" (Avis Brunnage), and is exploited by her estranged con-artist husband (Eric Portman) and her no-good son (Ronald Fraser) Even when she catches on to the duplicity of others, Ms. Evans is so far gone with her "whisperers" that the authorities refuse to believe her. Seedy and sordid though it may be, The Whisperers won Edith Evans the Best Actress award from the New York Critics' Circle.
