The main character, Helmi, is born into the house of Baron von Strandmann in Old-Town Tallinn, in 1908. The only thing that she knows for sure about her past is that her mother was an Estonian servant girl. Everything else is a discovery during a life that runs the course of a century - a life that has quite a lot of surprises in store for Helmi. In this house she finds happiness and suffering, passion and disappointment. She grows up alongside young Erik and waits for her big love to blossom. But one floor down lives projectionist Julius - a man who is far from indifferent when it comes to Helmi. All of the biggest historical events of the century leave their mark on the house. Its hardwood floors have born soldiers' gruff boots and gentleman's shiny oxfords. Its walls have held the fates of people from far and near, foreigners and locals. Helmi's home becomes a German salon, a revolution museum, and a working class commune. And as freedom comes, real estate crooks start sniffing around the place. The only things that remain unchanged in these turbulent times are the cinema hall projecting living images on the screen and Julius's quiet love for Helmi. Director Hardi Volmer's historical love story combines the grotesque of early silent films with the melodrama of the golden age of cinema with elements of both the epic and the comic.

Kren frames the image to suggest a proscenium, with a view to the harbor that conveys a literal sense of “tele-vision”. The static framing of the image and the clearly stratified mise-en-scène can hardly provoke interpretation. The sight of the girls does so all the more. Kren, the gentle voyeur - who turns the viewer into a secret accomplice - observes three teenagers, and probably like them, awaits a rendezvous. (Thomas Trummer)

A rare film by the legendary filmmaker Mustafa Abu Ali, one of the founders of the Palestine Film Unit, the first filmic arm of the Palestinian revolution. Shot by a French news team, the footage was edited by Mustafa in Lebanon to produce one of the earliest films on the occupied territory in Gaza. Scenes of the Occupation from Gaza employs experimental editing tech- niques to produce a cinematically and politically subversive film. The film won the prize as best film at the Damascus Film Festival in 1973 and was screened at multiple festivals. It was the only film produced by the Palestine Cinema Group, which in 1974 became the Palestine Cinema Institute.

Middle-aged lesbian Manok closes down ‘Rainbow’, the queer bar she’s run for years, and returns to her hometown, Iban-ri, following the death of her mother. But home feels as stifling and unfamiliar as ever. The village, where her ex-husband now serves as headman, greets her return with suspicion, and deep-rooted prejudice and exclusion still linger. Yet Manok refuses to back down. To break down the walls between past and present, village and self, she boldly runs for village chief. It’s a declaration—not of rejection, but of affirmation: to live without denying who she is, and to once again take her place at the center, on her own terms. In Iban-ri, Manok finds new beginnings and reconnects with severed ties. Among them are Guem-ja, an old flame, and Jae-yeon, a high school student hiding his true self in the suffocating atmosphere of the countryside. Manok, who lives openly and without apology, becomes a beacon for Jae-yeon, and he, in turn, finds the courage to finally come out to the world. Even far from the days of Rainbow, Manok is still surrounded by strong, loving women who stand by her side. Manok is a warm and spirited portrait of courage, survival, and community. It gently but powerfully captures how women like Manok challenge societal norms and build new forms of belonging. This isn’t a story of simply 'returning' home—it’s one of boldly beginning again.
