After quitting filmmaking about the tidal flat that underwent Saemangeum Seawall Project a few years ago, she moved to Gunsan-si, a city of Saemangeum, as she seemed destined to. Sura: A Love Song delivers the course of rediscovering the beauty of the tidal flat working together with the Citizens’ Survey Group on Saemangeum that has continued its research for nearly twenty years. It is filled with magnificent images, rivaling even those of National Geographic. It also offers a wonderful experience of watching small yet beautiful living creatures in the tidal flat with the guidance of an honest and friendly firstperson voiceover. Most important of all, the film asks the audience to recognize the urgent and desperate cries of the things left, a message that makes the group dance of the shorebirds in the end so unforgettable.

A hybrid work, Ana Elena Tejera’s portrait of her grandmother utilizes archival images, re-enactment and “biographical performance” to exorcise painful personal experience, family secrets, and Panamanian military dictatorship in the 1980s a history felt “through the skin.” Grandmother recounts how her husband returned from military training in Israel, fundamentally altered. “Why did God make me love you?” she asks, underlining a domain of fear, entrapment, and hidden violence. A moment of joy in movement ruptures memory’s prison-house, as grandmother dances alone in her old living room, a room where moving her body had long been forbidden.

The Luce Institute Archive celebrated 90 years of existence in 2014. To celebrate, nine of the most promising directors of Italian cinema made short documentary films from the institute’s collection. Alice Rohrwacher is one of them and her work talks about music, memory and war with Una Canzone. This short film is a mid-career work commissioned by Istituto Luce on its 90th anniversary and one segment of the documentary 9x10 novanta. Una Canzone recovers the lost art of singing through an ever-surprising montage of archival footage. Where did you learn the songs you know? Who taught you? These are the questions Rohrwacher posed in her neighbourhood, combining the answers with archival material from Luce Cinecittà.
