Cate Blanchett‘s Dirty Films has acquired the film rights to one of the hottest theater shows around: the Sydney Theatre Company’s adaptation of Oscar Wilde classic The Picture Of Dorian Gray, which has recently been lighting up London’s West End. Sarah Snook has garnered raves for her performance in the latest iteration of the show and last Sunday the Succession star scored an Olivier Award for Best Actress. Dirty Films partner Andrew Upton is working with the show’s mastermind Kip Williams on a treatment based on the technically dazzling one woman show, which sees its protagonist play 26 roles. The part was first performed by Eryn Jean Norvill in multiple sell-out runs across Australia. Oscar winner Blanchett attended the most recent run’s opening night in London earlier this year.

Basil Hallward (Denis Manuel) is a mediocre painter. His exhibitions owe their success to his social position and nothing more. But one day Basil meets Dorian Gray (Patrice Alexandre), symbol of youth and a certain beauty. The young man inspires Basil, so much so that his painting of Dorian turns out to be a disturbing masterpiece. Fascinated by his own portrait, the young man expressed the wish to sell his soul for an eternal youth. Lord Henry (Raymond Gérome), a friend of Basil's, idle, intelligent, cynical and devilishly seductive character, will then direct the life of Dorian Gray. Under his influence, Dorian gradually sinks into evil but keeps his youth intact, while the table gradually indicates all the stigmata of old age and vice. Until the day when Dorian, obsessed with the testimony of the painting, stabs him. This gesture instantly causes his death; and we find, lying at the foot of a portrait of a young man, the corpse of a repulsive man.

In contemporary London, a beautiful and rich young man, Dorian Gray, loves Sybil Vane, an aspiring actress; thanks to her, he's momentarily less self-centered. He's also sitting for a portrait painted by his friend, Basil Hallward; when it's done, Dorian complains he will grow old while the painting stays unchanged. On the same night, he slaps Sybil and sends her away, then accepts the seductive offer of a party's hostess to sleep with her. The next day, the painting looks slightly older as he becomes corrupt and amoral, capable of destroying many lives inclusive Sybil's. In horror and fascination, Dorian hides away the portrait and continues a life of degradation. Over time, as the portrait becomes hideous, he's unchanged by debauched life; finally, he and Basil face the painting.

A corrupt young man somehow keeps his youthful beauty, but a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.
