Nueng is driving one night with his wife, Dao, when their car hits a child who ends in a coma. In order to pay for the medical fees, he goes to a pawnshop, but whatever goods that he has are of little value. However, the owner of the pawnshop proposes to give him 1 million if he pawns his soul.

The Bytom area was once known for its coal mines, but structural change has caught up with it, too. The decline of the region is vividly demonstrated by the pawnshop of the Silesian city. Probably the biggest of its kind in Poland, the shop has seen better days. Jola and Wiesiek, the idiosyncratic operators, are each trying in their own way to cope with the crisis and revive business. The closing of the mines and the resulting unemployment in Bytom left behind all those who were unable to adapt to the new age. In the huge hall, they put increasingly absurd and worthless objects on the counter. The once lucrative trade in jewellery, electric devices and furniture has dwindled and however hard the employees work, the till stays empty. The wiring is unsound, nerves are raw and the tone between them gets rougher. Before they know it, the small business has turned into a kind of counselling centre: drying tears, ladling out soup and giving away goods instead of selling them. Jola in her voluminous fur coat always has an open ear and a warm blanket ready. Wiesiek devises one marketing scheme after the other. But will it be enough to save their business? A documentary report from the “Polish Detroit”, observed with delicacy and pitch-black humour.

Charlie competes with his fellow shop assistant. He is fired by the pawnbroker and rehired. He nearly destroys everything in the shop and and himself. He helps capture a burglar. He destroys a client's clock while examining it in detail.

The story is inspired by a true story, the real-life Casket Girls of New Orleans. The moniker refers to the young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s, bearing luggage resembling caskets. Because their arrival coincided with an uptick in the city’s murder rate, the girls were blamed and accused of being demons or vampires. The city imprisoned the girls in the attic of the Vatican-controlled Ursuline Convent, which still exists today. It’s the precise type of historical tale that feels ripe for horror. The French Quarter is a hub for vampires, after all. In The Casket Girls, Gabrielle Union will play Detective Shay Williams, who, along with her partner, “become trapped inside the Ursuline Convent with a group of tourists when the Casket Girls escape from their attic prison for the first time in over 300 years.”
