East Fresia 1401: the era of the feared sea pirates Klaus Störtebeker and Gödeke Michels is coming to an end. After a long period with no booty at last a bulging ship appears on the horizon. However, Störtebeker is badly wounded in the attempted capture and the pirates suffer ignominious defeat. Not only their ship is down the drain - Störtebeker himself is suddenly plagued by anxiety and doubt about his very existence as a pirate. He is drawn to the beautiful country girl Bille, while Michels gets rebuffed by the friesian princess Okka. In the very moment that the crew have mutinied and co-captain Michels is literally at the end of his tether, they discover on board their ramshackle old tub a most unique wonder weapon. Glory days are quickly revived - until the mighty Hanse consolidate their power and weaponry and go to war against the pirates. Störtebeker and Michels are forced to decide: To live as a farmer or to die as a pirate.

The nature of the Baltic Sea offers many surprises as demonstrated in the three-part series “Wild Baltic Sea“. The first episode takes us from Denmark, via Lithuania’s Curonian Spit to Latvia. In the autumn of 2015, an absolute rarity appeared: a Sowerby’s beaked whale. The Curonian Spit is home to many sea eagles. The second episode presents the islands between Estonia, Sweden and Finland. In Autumn the strange mating calls of the moose can be heard everywhere. On Gotland golden eagles breed in trees. 300 kilometres further north is Finland’s Archipelago, home to brown bears. The third episode takes us to the Bay of Bothnia. In winter home to ringed seals. 300 kilometres further south millions of fish head for the coast to lay their eggs. Finland is the habitat of the flying squirrel. In the spring males begin looking for females.

I didn't make any further research on the film which is a fictionalized account of the last years (1917, 1918) in the life of the Petersburg biologist Kliment Timiryazev, called Polezhaev in the film and played by Cherkassov. The propaganda elements are in place: In awe, everybody listens when Comrade Lenin is on the phone, or when his letter is being read. The finale is the obligatory heroic speach, choruses, then presumably death and configuration into a statue. But I liked the script, full of human touches, the Petersburg academic world being disrupted by the revolution, desolation and starvation in the streets, the heroic sailors of the Baltic fleet, the colour red and its impact in nature and politics. Enjoy this little known classic.
