SYNOPSIS Photographer Jun-sik is normally preoccupied with work and neglects his family. Not spending enough time with his wife and daughter, it is no wonder Jun-sik has these strange dreams. In his dream, Jun-sik is walking along the street when he finds a necklace with a picture of a woman in it. He throws the picture out and goes to the hotel to give the necklace to his wife. That day, the woman in the picture, Chung-ah, comes to Jun-sik. She tells him that they were lovers in a past life. Chung-ah wants to rediscover her love with Jun-sik. He falls hard for her beauty. Jun-sik goes to a Buddhist monk and spends seven days in a room full of amulets, listening to the Buddhist monk's chants. Overcoming the seven days of hardship, Jun-sik goes to find Chung-ah with the Buddhist monk's Taoist magic. He attempts to turn her into ash. A measured, evenly paced, extremely controlled, psychologically mesmerizing film about a doctor's split with his wife, and his subsequent return to his Communist homeland, brilliantly underplayed by Rudolf Hrusinsky, a man in real life who was blacklisted in Czechoslovakia for his anti-Communist leanings, and only the slightest movement in his face could ever be detected. But he was superb in this role, his dignity challenged at every turn, but always remaining intact. He is introduced to a countryside clinic by the local Communist lackey, his quarters are spare and without possessions. Immediately, as the outsider, he is the object of the entire town's suspicion, represented in a single scene where he is smoking potatoes, something he must have learned as a child, in a small attempt to gather some semblance of himself. Yet across the landscape a cry is heard for him to put out the fire; that's not allowed; what is he, crazy? Every attempt to help someone is met with whispers behind his back and with the town's scorn. The psychological pressure to allow so little to be shown, always holding everything inside, as who knows, someone near could, and would use any piece of information against you. This film reminded me of some of the early Kieslowski films, such as the rarely seen CURRICULUM VITAE, where in that film the Communist Party pressure is relentless to obtain confessions from your neighbors for the most ordinary actions of men. To live under the pressure of such a constant cloud of suspicion, where the Party representative is rarely even seen or heard, is wonderfully transparent in this film. - cranesareflying, imdb

Mi-na lost her parents from a fire when she was a child, and has been rescued and adopted by Hoon-sik and was raised like her own daughter. She follows her father who she likes, and thinks of as a man. Mi-na's friend Soo-jin has been in and out of Mi-na's house since they were kids. She also see Hoon-sik as her ideal type. And then another friend, Min-cheol... though a return student, he thinks of Mi-na and Soo-jin as friends and they rely on each other. Hoon-sik, though a bit indecisive, had a sturdy physique and raised Mi-na. And then, Soo-jin went to the drunk Hoon-sik's room and fell asleep, and made love with each other. There are things that cannot be caught... Min-cheol faces Mi-na with a sincere heart... From then on, Hoon-sik and Soo-jin developed a relationship with each other... Mi-na watches in despair...
