For nearly two decades, John Gianvito has been carving out a unique space in American cinema with passion projects of expansive shape and political ambition, including The Mad Songs of Fernanda Hussein, a documentary-fiction inquiry into the human toll of the Gulf War, and Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind, a becalmed yet radical Howard Zinn–inspired reflection on American progressivism. In his new film, Gianvito meditates on a particular moment in early 20th-century history: when Helen Keller began speaking out passionately on behalf of progressive causes. Beginning in 1913, when, at age 32, Keller gave her first public talk before a general audience, Her Socialist Smile is constructed of onscreen text taken from Keller’s speeches, impressionistic images of nature, and newly recorded voiceover by poet Carolyn Forché. The film is a rousing reminder that Keller’s undaunted activism for labor rights, pacifism, and women’s suffrage was philosophically inseparable from her battles for the rights of the disabled.

Many people call themselves socialists, even in America. But what does that mean? And is socialism really a better way? The documentary, Heaven On Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism, takes viewers on a historical journey into the origins and developments of socialist theory and the countries and peoples who have embraced it. It shows, by fact and example, not opinion, why socialism can rarely, if ever, work for any people for longer than one generation without corruption or implosion. It is one of the most interesting historical documentaries I have ever seen, and would be an awesome addition to any video library.

Artist Htoo Lwin Myo excavates the lesser-known and wildly joyful history of Myanmar’s horror and genre film industry in the 1950s that has persisted through political turmoil and archival neglect, told directly by the people who made it. The Western gaze has lately viewed Myanmar through a connection to political oppression and natural catastrophe, what’s lesser known from that perspective is the country’s cinematic history. In No Magic for Socialists Burmese artist Htoo Lwin Myo looks to one of the most delightful chapters of his nation’s film history. The special effects heavy horror and fantasy spectacles of the 1950s and early 1960s – a genre essentially crushed after the military coup of 1962 and the rise to power of a socialist party that considered these tales of superstition a violation of the new ideological order. Considering the poor state of the preservation of Myanmar filmic heritage, it’s with great luck that some examples of this persecuted genre still survive, if usually only in fragments and in deteriorated states. Still, each frame Htoo Lwin Myo has unearthed and now shares with the world is cause for joy, while each story told by the filmmakers he assembles from the bygone industry is a source of wonder.
