Spinster septuagenarian Ella Bishop, on the brink of retirement from her 52-year career as freshman-English teacher at small-town Midwestern University, her alma mater, wants to look toward the future, but can't help reflect upon her past, what brought her to this point. Although she always wanted to be a teacher and was both surprised and ecstatic when her mentor, Midwestern's then-President James Corcoran, offered her the English teacher opening upon graduation, she only saw it as one short phase of her life until she got married and had a family, unlike her younger cousin Amy Saunders, who solely needed romance and love to feel fulfilled. She thinks about the two men with whom she was mutually in love and would have married if she could have, if not for one circumstance or another, and the one man whose love for her was--and is--unrequited, at least in the romantic sense, but who was and has always been there for her. Although she never birthed her own child, she thinks about the many to whom she acted as mother or grandmother, practically or emotionally: her many students, some of whom have gone on to great things; her niece Hope whom she practically raised; and her great-niece Gretchen. She also thinks about having stayed at Midwestern in her hometown, in her career which was not always smooth sailing, especially with the changing times.

On October 9th, 1963, at 10:39 pm, 260 million cubic meters of rock fell down from Mount Toc to the artificial lake formed by the Vajont dam, the higher dam in the world. The landslide formed a 250-meters wave and 50 million cubic meters of water completely destroied all the below towns, killing more than 2000 people. Planned by engineer Semenza, Vajont dam (263 meters) had to carry the electricity in all the houses of the country. Tina Merlin, a journalist from 'L'Unitá', tried for years to denounce the danger to build a dam near the Mount Toc and expecially to denounce all the omissions by the corrupted politicians and workers in charge of the dam construction. They preferred to trust in old geologist Dal Piaz instead to hear engineer Semenza young son's alarming analysis. No one seemed to understand the high danger until that October fatal night.

青年贵族纪兰荪（朱飞饰），起初爱上了一个善良的女子纫珠（张织云饰），两人结婚后，生了一个儿子取名良彦。后来，纪兰荪又迷恋上另一个女子柔云（杨耐梅饰），而和纫珠离异了，他们所生的儿子良彦，仍由兰荪抚养。柔云做了主妇以后，没有生育；为了夺取家产，千方百计谋害良彦。纫珠虽然离去，为了关怀良彦（郑小秋饰），化装成女佣，出入兰荪家，以保护她的儿子，一次柔云以毒品置食物中，致使良彦得病，医生予以药品治疗，柔云又想偷取药品，被纫珠发觉，两人争斗，其案遂破。柔云看到阴谋败露，即狼狈出逃，后因发生车祸死去。于是，纫珠和兰荪重归于好。 《空谷兰》是包天笑根据自己的译本小说《野之花》（原系英国女作家亨利·荷特的小说，包天笑根据日本作家黑岩泪香的日文译本改编，并加以中国化）改编的。由于故事曲折动人，上映时颇为轰动，明星公司盈得了13万元的票房收入，创造了默片的最高卖座纪录。《空谷兰》也是张石川“捧红张织云，发掘朱飞、塑造杨耐梅银幕形象的得意之作。”1926年8月，上海新世界游乐场举行电影博览会，《空谷兰》一片也在博览会上展映。张织云在片中一人兼饰两角（纫珠和丫环）的表演令人瞩目，因此在博览会的“电影女明星选举”中，荣获首届“电影皇后”的桂冠。 1934年，明星公司和天一公司又同时将《空谷兰》重拍为有声影片（天一将片名改为《纫珠》）。
