11 year-old Milton Adams is growing up in an uncertain world. With his parents constantly stressing about their careers and finances, and the neighborhood bully tormenting him, Milton feels his whole world is in crisis. But when his Grandpa Howard comes to visit, he discovers anxiety about the past and worrying about the future only make things worse and prevent him from finding true happiness moment to moment.

This is one of many films in a sub-par collection of animated shorts entitled "Avoid Eye Contact: Volume One". Most of these shorts did absolutely nothing for me and that's a real shame, as I usually love these sorts of compilations--having seen all three of The Animation Show DVDs, several Spike and Mike ones, collections of Canadian Film Board cartoons and many, many others. I really wanted to like this. Fortunately, GOOD NIGHT NORMA...GOODNIGHT MILTON worked and worked well. While the very simple animation wasn't great, the story and sensibilities were! The film begins with a couple waving goodbye to their house guests. Then, as the couple slowly undresses and readies for bed, the film gets WEIRD!!! The talk and talk about how they didn't like the couple who left (despite acting very chummy when the film started) and complained that the couple are so fake!! This hypocrisy is great, because as they whine about this couple and how they are jerks, Norma and Milton slowly begin revealing their own hypocrisy--in a very grisly way. However, it would truly spoil the film to say more, so I'll wrap it up by saying that the payoff was worth it. A nice and insightful picture.

When Emil travels by bus to Berlin to visit his grandmother and his cousin, his money is stolen by a crook who specializes in digging tunnels. Emil must get the money back as it is for his grandmother. While following the thief, Emil runs into Gustav, an enterprising young boy who gathers up all his friends to help Emil find the money. Emil's cousin also gets involved and they get into more trouble than they bargained for when Emil's pickpocket turns out to be mixed up with a couple of notorious bank robbers.

On a train journey to Berlin, the bright young Emil from Neustadt an der Dosse meets a shady character. The man calls himself Grundeis and gives Emil a piece of candy, which makes the boy drowsy. When he wakes up at his destination, the man is gone - and so is Emil's money. He catches sight of the rogue disappearing into the city melee. There Emil meets "Gustav mit der Hupe," who detects a whiff of big adventure and when they find Grundeis, he alerts his gang. Together Emil and the Detectives embark on a chase which takes them across Berlin. Emil's little cousin Pony Hütchen emerges as one of the main protagonists in the adventure, which eventually sees the gang catching the villain red-handed. He gets convicted and the gang receives a generous reward after it turns out Grundeis is far more than a petty thief: he's a wanted bank robber.

John Milton is often considered too difficult and obscure for today's reader, but to Armando Iannucci Paradise Lost is a thrilling work of creative genius that we ignore at our peril.
