Mel has a box of props, primarily toys, that he is letting Rob distribute amongst himself, Sally and Buddy. None of the toys are really appropriate for Ritchie, but the one set of props that no one really knows what to do with is a pair of live baby ducks. Despite once having brought home some chicks for Ritchie that died the same day, which devastated both Laura and Ritchie, Rob decides to bring them home as he falls in love with them. Laura is against having the ducks if only because of what happened to the chicks, but once Ritchie sees them and names them - Oliver and Stanley - they know they can't refuse them to Ritchie. Three months later and after the death of Oliver, Stanley, now full grown, is a beloved member of the family to Ritchie, but he isn't looking too healthy, much like Oliver did before he died.

This game consisted of two teams of two players each. One player would be at a game board while their teammate would be in a soundproof booth. The person at the game board communicated a word or phrase to their teammate in the booth using three letters at first and added a letter every five seconds until the word or phrase was identified. The team using fewer letters won the game. Normally there was a "Home Team" consisting of two celebrities and a "Challengers Team" of one celebrity and a contestant. A tie score was considered a win for the contestant, who would win prizes for each game won by the Challengers Team. In other words, if the Challengers won a game, the contestant would win a prize. Each show included a P. D. Q. Special, a three-game match with special prizes awarded to the contestant if the Challengers won two out of the three games.

Scorch was a 1300-year-old dragon who lived with TV weatherman Brian and his daughter Jessica. Scorch could talk, and appeared with Brian on his news program posing as a ventriloquist's dummy. Scorch would make jokes during Brian's weather forecasts. No one knew Scorch's real identity.

Rob manages to get tickets for Laura and Millie to attend the filming of the nationally broadcast “Pay as You Go!“ game show, whose host, Johnny Patrick, is renowned for getting his guests flustered. Through a series of incidents, Laura gets chosen as one of the contestants, news of which gets back to Rob at the office. Rob, Buddy, Sally and even Alan and Mel all decide to watch the live broadcast to see what Johnny will get Laura to do or say. They only manage to watch Laura's introduction, where she says only the right and nice things about Alan and the show. What they don't see is the end of the broadcast where Johnny manages to make Laura drop a bombshell of secret news specifically about Alan. When Rob finds out, he and Laura just hope that by a miracle Alan doesn't find out; but, later sure that Alan knows what Laura said on national television, both Rob and Laura take different approaches to make amends and/or protect Rob's job.
