　　二十世纪五十年代的美国，电视编剧Alfred Miller因为支援,扶持,拥护,维护共产主义而上了黑名单，不能公开发表作品，于是找到了他的老伙伴,好友,挚友,密友Howard Prince（伍迪·艾伦 Woody Allen 饰）让他用Howard的名字发表作品，并给他百分之十的佣金。于是Howard从一个日常,生存,生计,日子拮据的餐厅收银员摇身一变成著名的电视剧编剧，他还找到了其他同样被列入黑名单的作家，当“出头人”。Howard还相识,明白,明了,知晓,理解,认知,懂得了电视台的一名女职业,事业,工作岗位,职责人员Florence Barrett（Andrea Marcovicci 饰），Florence十分欣赏Howard的才华，两人坠入爱河。演员Hecky Brown也是黑名单上的一个演员，他被要求去查出Howard的政治背景，但一无所获。后来，Florence因为她的共产主义主张辞职了，而Hecky也因为共产主义背景而不能持续,延续,存续,连续其演员生涯跳楼自杀。目睹了Hecky葬礼的Howard感触颇多，于是当Howard接受委员会审查时，他与调查委员会展开了周旋.......
